Demonic Healed, Peter's Mother-in-Law and Others Cured

Capernaum

Strange how out of order Matthew places these events. Even the Sermon on the Mount he places before his own calling by Jesus.

His new (Astonishing) doctrine

( Mar 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Mar 1:27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. )

was " repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"

Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The unclean spirits are called devils.

Luk 4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

Luk 4:41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

I wonder if this is the first occurrence in the Bible, Old or New Testament, of demon (devil) possession.  I take it to mean fallen angels not the spirits of dead humans. This would make a good Bible study. Jesus and his apostles repeat this wonder many times in the future.

That Jesus cautions them not to speak, I take to mean he does not want it yet revealed that he is to die on the cross for the sins of all.  Right now, I believe he reveals that at the Last Supper - maybe earlier.  It is important to research that.

Mar 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. Mar 1:27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mar 1:28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

Luk 4:31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. Luk 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. Luk 4:33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Luk 4:34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. Luk 4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. Luk 4:36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. Luk 4:37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
