Mockery by Roman Soldiers
Spring A. D. 30
Friday
Jerusalem
Nothing about a severe scourging here; just a spitting
in the face and a smote on the head with a reed.
If Jesus had already undergone the whipping as in the
current movie, it would be strange that the soldiers would soil a
scarlet (purple??) robe on him at this time.
No, I have to believe they took no interest in making
his suffering severe.
Looks like there are three different versions of when
this event of the gorgeous robe took place. Matthew and Mark say
just before Jesus is led to the cross, Luke says by Herod's men, John
says before his second appearance before Pilate.
It is a stretch to think it happened three different
times.

Mat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took
Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band
of soldiers.
Mat 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a
scarlet robe.
Mat 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of
thorns, they put it
upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee
before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mat 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the
reed, and smote him on the head.

Mar 15:16 And the soldiers led him away into the
hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
Mar 15:17 And they clothed him with purple, and
platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his
head,
Mar 15:18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of
the Jews!
Mar 15:19 And they smote him on the head with a
reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing
their knees
worshipped him.
