Great Commission, The Ascension
Spring A. D. 30
During 40 Days until
Ascension
Mt. in Galilee
This whole account is very confusing to me in trying
to reconcile one Gospel with another.
Mark and Luke agree but Matthew and John don't seem to
agree with each other and neither agrees with Mark and Luke.
The problem revolves around when the group of eleven
is in Jerusalem, when in Galilee; when there are ten, seven or eleven
present.
One could point to Mark and say baptism is necessary
for salvation or belief alone.
My suspicion that the Great Commission applied only to
the eleven but not to those of us who have no special calling (Paul's
commission may be a special exception, a special calling) hangs mainly
on Luke 28:49.
Luk 24:48 And ye are witnesses of
these things.
Luke does seem to contradict John. They both have the
account of Jesus appearing to the "ten". John has them breathed on
and receiving the Holy Ghost at that time. Luke doesn't mention
the breathing but says clearly in Acts 1:8
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive
power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be
witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in
Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
they will get that blessing later and records the
event as at Pentecost.
Act 2:1 And when the day of
Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place.
Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a
sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the
house where they were sitting.
Act 2:3 And there appeared unto
them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled
with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance.

Mat 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away
into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Mat 28:17 And when they saw him, they worshipped
him: but some doubted.
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them,
saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway,
even unto the
end of the world. Amen.

Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all
the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall
be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that
believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new
tongues;
Mar 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if
they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands
on the sick, and they shall recover.

Luk 24:44 And he said unto them, These
are the words
which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be
fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and
in the
prophets, and in
the psalms, concerning me.
Luk 24:45 Then opened he their understanding,
that they might understand the scriptures,
Luk 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written,
and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third
day:
Luk 24:47 And that repentance and remission of
sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem.
Luk 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
Luk 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my
Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued
with power from on high.
