Candle Under a Bushel - Matthew

Sermon on the Mount Near Capernaum

Mat 5:1  And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

Mat 5:2  And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Mat 5:14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Mat 5:15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Mat 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Key words:

Ye = Jesus’ disciples  (Mat 5:1-2)

Light of the world = Jesus (John 1:9)

Your light = The message, repentance and God’s kingdom (Mat 10:27) (Mar 6:12) (Luke 9:2)

Your good works = Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils  (Mat 10:7-8)

In other words:

If you disciples are wondering why you received such strict instructions in righteousness in “The Sermon on the Mount”, it’s because you will be Jesus’ surrogates here on earth.  People will judge Jesus and his creditability by your actions.
