A Wise Man Builds on a Rock - Matthew and Luke

Mat 5:1  And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

Mat 5:2  And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Mat 7:24  Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

Mat 7:25  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

Mat 7:26  And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

Mat 7:27  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Key words:

House = earthly life (Ps 119:54)

Rock = Christ (Matt 16:18)`

Rain = The time of final judgment  (James 5:7)

Floods came = time of testing of where you have placed your faith (Gen 7:11)

Winds blew = God’s judgment (Jer 22:22)

Sand = any other foundation than Christ (1 Cor 3 :10-15)

Great was the fall = all die (1 Cor 15:22)

In other words:

Jesus told this parable to his disciples as part of his “Sermon on the Mount”.  It is basically instructions in conduct for those who enlist in his elite band of apostles and disciples.  The penalty for sloth in following these instructions is quite severe, eternity separated from God.
